Located in the northern outskirts of Kyoto, Mt. Kurama is renowned as the place where Usui Mikao sensei, the founder of Reiki, attained enlightenment after a 21-day fasting and meditation retreat in 1922.
A visit to Mt. Kurama provides a profound and transformative experience, blending nature, spirituality, and the teachings of Reiki under the guidance of a Tou Dento Japanese Reiki master healer, Aya.

Meeting at the Kurama trainstation.

Train fare from Demachi Yanagi train station to Kurama:

Enter the entrance Gate hike towards Yuki Shrine (15 min.)or take a cable car (3 min.) until the middle of the mountain.
Entrance fee to the mountain: 500 yen (3.5 USD)

Yuki Shrine
Located on the path to Kurama-dera Temple. In 940, the deities were moved from the Kyoto Imperial Palace to here. One of the most memorable features of Yuki-jinja Shrine is a monolithic 800-year-old cedar which stands 53 meters tall in front of the main hall. It is believed to be an object that attracts kami, or spirits, in Shintoism.

Eat a picnic lunch or snack. (depending on the weather condition)
Receive a short attunement by Aya,
Meditate together to feel the surrounding energy and nature.

Feel free to use the special time and space on your own!
Usually, master Aya will join you until here.
You can choose to go down the mountain on the same route to Kurama station or continue the tour with Akiko and Aya
to the other side of the mountain to Kibune side as follows.

Oosugi Gongen sha
Located at the summit of Mt. Kurama, The Osugi Gongen Shrine was once home to a giant cedar tree approximately 1,000 years old, which was revered and worshipped as one of the three deities of Kurama Temple since ancient times. The Shrine was destroyed in a big typhoon in 2018. This area is popular as a meditation site, and believed where Master Usui received Reiki.

Kifuneーjinja Shrine
Kifune Shrine enshrines the deity of water and rain, the source of all life, and is the head shrine of two thousand water god shrines across Japan. Since the 11th century, the main shrine has been rebuilt more than 36 times.
It was ranked among the top 16 imperial shrines in the Heian period (794-) and envoys were sent here whenever there was a drought or flooding in Kyoto.
The deity is a dragon god, and is said to help people get things done, especially when they are starting something new! This Shrine is also famous for match-making.

The Kifune Shrine was originally built in this area but swept away in flooding.
Directly below the inner shrine is a large hole called the “ryuuketsu,” dragon’s cave, believed as one of the most powerful power spots in Japan, and has many unique legends.
The surrounding shrine is also interesting as a treasure house of nature, with many old tall trees.

★Master Teacher Aya will join you on the tour to the mountaintop. It is optional to go to the Kifune Shrine.
★ In case of rain or if you wish, you can take the cable car up and down the mountain, or descend from the summit to the same Kurama-dera Temple side again. In this case, the Kifune-jinja Shrine visit along the river will not be included.
★ Hiring a taxi (1-4 people) for One day of 8hrs: about 55000 yen (about 360 USD).
